After college I took a position at a homeless shelter for women and children in Minneapolis. This experience really drew me to working with people on a deeper level. The families I worked with had issues meeting their basic needs, however not being able to meet those needs had resulted from emotional pain experienced in life. I saw that I needed to strengthen my skills to be able to work with people on that deeper level.
This began my journey towards becoming a therapist. As I have worked with people from all walks of life, I have grown in my ability to see the beauty that God sees in each one of us. I have experience working with teens, adults, families, and couples. They have faced issues such as depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, and loss. I have been honored to be a part of each one of their journeys and to work with them through the tough spots and eventually witness the joy.
Marital therapy is especially meaningful for me, as I believe the strength of the marital relationship really is the base for strong families and even strong communities. I see marriage as one of the only ways to experience unconditional love with a choice. Marriage is a choice to commit to one person and because we all have faults that commitment is tested. This is often more difficult than we could ever imagine, so my desire is to hold on to hope for couples as we together work on mending and strengthening their commitment.
God has been with me through the trials and mistakes in my own life and His love for me has never wavered. I hope to be a reflection of that non-judgmental presence and work with my clients to allow them to see in themselves what God sees.
A verse which gives me strength and encouragement is Isaiah 64:8
We are the clay and you are the potter. We are all formed by your hand.
This verse really helps me to see no matter how our choices affect us, God can still make us into his masterpiece.
